| Robert Ernest Rudolph when he resigned as Director of Traffic for the City of Cambridge, MA. This picture was taken in Central Square, Cambridge, which was a notable example of his modernizing the traffic system of the entire city.
Back of photograph is blank. Modernizing Central Square and Harvard Square in Cambridge were among his greatest accomplishments during his tenure as Traffic Director. Prior to his arrival, both were simply large paved areas with no islands and few or no line markings. People simply drove from their entry into the square to their exit point somewhere else in the square in whatever the most direct route was that they could see. He totally redesigned both squares by introducing traffic control islands, (on one of which this photograph was taken), traffic signals, lane markings, bus stops, taxi stands and traffic signals. Traffic flowed smoothly and safely. We take these approaches for granted today in most citys. But in Cambridge at that time they were radical and futuristic. |
